‘The Bachelor: London Calling’: “What Kind of Person Does This Sort of Thing?”

April 22nd, 2008

noelle bachelorPreviously! on ‘The Bachelor: London Calling’, Marshana’s attitude got her sent home, and Robin showed her own after being ousted. Four sad, sad women remain. And they’re taking Matt home to Mama!

Matt, in Los Angeles, is taken to visit Shayne’s (divorced) parents, one of whom - as we have been reminded ad nauseum - is alleged famous person Lorenzo Lamas. Shayne’s weave tracks, by the way, may be the stealth fifth remaining contestant on this show. Lorenzo appears and squints at Matt in what he must assume is a fetching manner. And then. And then! He totally calls his own daughter out for appearing on this show just for the fame: “she wants to be a good actress, but she wants to be a star more.” Oooh, snap, Lorenzo Lamas! But then, one-on-one, he pulls the big father act and says he was trying to protect Shayne from heartbreak. I get the distinct impression that he and Shayne don’t know each other all that well. Then they travel across town to visit Shayne’s absolutely terrifying mother, who may very well be Joan van Ark. The entire family - mother and sister included - is swathed in leopard print, with black roots and polyester extensions a-flying. Mom’s Restylane has cooked up roast beef and yorkshire pudding, and later shows home videos of a little gymnast Shayne prancing around.

Then, we travel to Colorado to meet Chelsea’s family. Matt reiterates that he’s concerned about Chelsea’s commitment to this whole enterprise - after all, last week she called him “buddy” 12 times in a row and then told him she hates holding hands. Chelsea clearly gets along with her parents really well, which is refreshing. The four have dinner together, and Chelsea’s father starts the protective father routine, but Matt seems to have learned from the Lamas experience, and heads him off at the pass. By the fourth home visit, he’s going to introduce himself to somebody’s father as a eunuch. Chelsea is concerned that Matt doubts the depth of her feelings for him, and they do that totally awkward “I love….being with you” “I love…the way you make me feel too” thing you do after a third date.

Elsewhere in Colorado, Matt visits Noelle’s family on their ranch. Lord, she’s adorable. Both Matt and Noelle admit that they don’t know each other as well as he knows some of the other girls. They ride horses and she curls up onto his lap and tells him that he’s only the second man she’s ever brought home. Awwww. Matt’s riding skills leave a little something to be desired, and her family really busts his chops about it. Noelle’s dad is conservative and wonders what kind of person goes on television to find a wife. Um, yeah, Noelle’s dad. After dinner, Noelle’s mother and one of her sisters take Matt outside to find out exactly how he feels about her and Matt admits that, while he is falling in love with Noelle, he’s falling in love with “other girls” as well. Whoooooops.

Amanda has hired actors to play her parents for her hometown visit in Talahassee because, in her words, “Matt loves pranks.” Fake Mom laughs hysterically at everything and gawks at the size of Matt’s…feet. Fake Dad asks if they’ve been intimate. Oh, this is horrible. Just horrible. Fake Mom does the nipple-grab teased in last week’s preview. And, of course, Fake Dad comes out to catch Fake Mom jumping Matt. Oy. Amanda reveals the prank and Matt seems - less than amused. He talks about how “impressed” he is with Amanda’s ingenuity. Bye bye, Amanda! The real parents come out and are apparently perfectly normal human beings, but I think Matt’s ego is too big to handle this kind of slap.

The ladies gather back in Los Angeles for the rose ceremony, and Amanda is rockin’ the cleavage! She knows she screwed up. One little lady is going home tonight, and I’m pretty darn sure it won’t be Shayne or Noelle. But I’m usually wrong, so please feel free to ignore me. And Mrs. Matt Grant is not…Noelle. Dag nab it! Why, Matt?! Why?!

Orlando woman’s prank endears her to “The Bachelor”

April 22nd, 2008

Bachelor” fans owe a debt to Orlando’s Amanda Rantuccio. She jazzed up the looking-for-love contest Monday night by hiring actors to play her parents in Niceville.

What a performance on “The Bachelor: London Calling.” Fake mom started pawing “Bachelor” Matt Grant and cavorting like she was a contender on the ABC show. Ah, ma.

Amanda’s prank was a hilarious break from the maneuvering and blather as the final four women jockeyed for Grant’s support. The conversation on this particular reality show drives home this point: Talk is cheap.

Yet Amanda’s stunt meant less insipid talk. And the prank impressed Grant, a strapping Brit. He decided that Amanda would continue as he reduced the field from four to three.

Even so, winning may not be the way to go. Grant’s fascination with Shayne, the dippy daughter of Lorenzo Lamas, is baffling. And Chelsea, the other contender, is so chatty. Could it be that this Bachelor isn’t so smart when it comes to looking for love?

We learn more next week. The women reunite to discuss the show May 5. The finale airs May 12.

We’ll hope for the best for Amanda, a senior account executive in an advertising firm. She showed spunk with her stunt and deserves a dozen roses.

The Bachelor: Episode 12.6 Recap

April 22nd, 2008

bachelorOn tonight’s episode of The Bachelor, Matt headed out on the dreaded but always comical hometown dates. He traveled to meet the families of Shayne, Chelsea, Noelle, and Amanda. Matt had to deal with revelations and being grilled by family members and one woman, who decided to play a huge prank on him. With four women left, he only had three roses to give out tonight, ending his relationship with one of them. Here are more details on Matt’s hometown visits on tonight’s episode of The Bachelor.

Matt visits Shayne’s family first and meets her parents separately, since they are divorced. When she meets her famous father, Lorenzo Lamas, he blurts out to Matt that Shayne was just interested in getting on television when she decided to go on The Bachelor. Shayne is furious and quickly tries to defend herself, saying that she is only there for him. It seems to be good enough for both Matt and her father, who accept and appreciate what she has to say about her feelings. He meets her mother, who prepares a traditional British meal to make him feel like he’s home. Matt had a great time and didn’t want to leave.

On his hometown date with Chelsea, he tries to explain to her family just how serious he is about finding love. Though it seems obvious to her father that she is falling in love with Matt, Chelsea has yet to articulate that to the one person who needs to hear it most. After a nice, relaxing meal, it’s time for Matt to head out. Chelsea walks him to his car and gives him a nice, long kiss. She tells him how much she loves spending time with him and tries to let him know how much she has fallen for him.

When Matt goes to meet Noelle, the two enjoy a nice day in the country, taking a hike and going on for a ride on horses. Noelle’s family is very warm and welcoming, definitely approving of Matt. Before he gets away without an awkward moment, Noelle’s sister asks him straight out if he is falling in love with her.  Matt said yes but also admitted that he was falling in love with more than one woman.  Noelle shared some sweet moments with Matt but ultimately, chose to keep her guard up.

Finally, Matt went to see Amanda and it was a hometown date to remember.  Amanda, knowing that Matt loved pranks, hired two actors to play her parents.  Her father asked uncomfortable questions while her mother tried to make out with him.  When Matt couldn’t take another moment of being there, Amanda admitted that it was all a joke and brought out her real parents to meet him.  They ended up having a great time and Matt thought the joke was “brilliant” and the best prank he’s ever had played on him.

At the rose ceremony, Matt chose to give the first rose to Shayne.  His next one went to Amanda with the last one going to Chelsea.  Matt decided to eliminated Noelle, feeling that their connection came too late.  She took the rejection well and said that it wasn’t the first time her guarded nature cost her a chance at love.

The Bachelor Meets Mom and Dad

April 22nd, 2008

shayneTonight’s Bachelor found Matt off visiting hometown’s of the remaining women and meeting their families. We were promised excitement and excitement is what was delivered.

First Matt headed off to Los Angeles for a chance to impress Shayne’s parents. They both seemed a bit nervous as they waited for her father, Lorenzo Lamas to arrive. Shayne spent the time coaching Matt on how to pronounce correctly her father’s name. They both agree that if the family and the man don’t get along, then the relationship can not work.

After the introductions Matt tells Lorenzo that he thinks Shayne is beautiful, amazing and sincere. Lorenzo counters by saying that he thinks that Shayne saw going on The Bachelor as her opportunity to become a star. This upsets Shayne who makes it clear to both men that she is here for Matt and only for Matt.

Afterwards, Lorenzo and Matt go off to have a discussion alone where Lorenzo tells Matt that he does believe Shayne is sincere and that he cannot toy with her feelings. Matt tells him that for some reason their relationship just works and Lorenzo tells him that he hopes it works out for the both of them. Before he leaves Lorenzo tells Shayne that he thinks Matt’s feelings are real and that she should follow her heart.

Then Shayne takes Matt to meet her mom. Matt is “digging” her house decorated in leopard prints and her two dogs, one of which is wearing a pink tutu. They sit down to eat a British meal of roast beef and Yorkshire Pudding, and Matt says he feels like he is back at home again. Later Shayne’s mom takes Matt back to talk to him alone and shows him a home video of Shayne. She asks him how he would handle seeing his girlfriend or wife kissing other men. Matt tells her that each party just has to look out for one another and make the effort. She gives him a hug and states that she feels good about all of it.

Shayne’s sister asks Shayne if she is in love with Matt and Shayne admits that she is falling in love with him but that she cannot say that she is in love with him already. At the end of the evening Shayne walks Matt out where they share a kiss. Matt tells the cameras that he got Shayne wrong and that he has fallen for her big time.

Next, Matt headed to Durango, CO to meet Chelsea’s family. He is still trying to figure out Chelsea’s feelings for him. Chelsea tells Matt that bringing him home is a big deal for her and that she gets a bit emotional around her family since she does not see them often.

While eating dinner after meeting her family Chelsea’s father asks Matt if he is serious or if he is just playing and enjoying meeting 25 girls. He assures him that he is in this to settle down. Later Chelsea’s father describes Matt as charming and sincere. Chelsea tells her father that she did not want to like him but that now she cannot wait to get to know him.

Matt opens up to Chelsea’s mom telling her that Chelsea is beautiful and smart but that he has not been sure most of the time if Chelsea is genuine. Her mother points out that Matt has to remember that it is not just Chelsea he is dating, and that it can be hard to open up when there are other women involved.

When Chelsea walks Matt out she decides to open up a little more and tells him how much she loves being with him and that she wants him to miss her until they are together again. They kiss and he heads out after telling the cameras that he feels like the two of them could make it together.

Matt heads north to Loveland, CO to meet Noelle’s family. It started off a bit rocky as Matt could not direct the horse he was riding to go where he wanted to go. After a few minutes, Noelle’s father invites him to play horseshoes and Matt admits he is nervous because of how strict Noelle has said that her father is. Then her father point blank asks him why a person would do what he is doing, meaning dating several women on national television. Matt tries to assure him that his intentions are pure.

After dinner, Noelle’s sisters take Matt outside, wanting to find out if he is really into Noelle or not. They ask him if he is falling in love with anyone and he says yes, more than one person, and tells them that one of them is Noelle. Inside the house Noelle’s mother and father are telling her that sometimes you just have to let down your guard and open up.

When Noelle walks him out and they say goodbye, he tells her that it was great meeting her family and that his only regret for the whole evening was not spending enough time together. Noelle hopes that she did not come around and open up too late.

Lastly, Matt heads off to Tallahassee, FL where he is going to meet Amanda’s family. Amanda knows what a big prankster Matt is and decides to hire actors to play her parents. When he comes in he is not sure what to make of her near drunk mother that is laughing at everything he says, and her father who is very critical. After a few minutes of group discussion he asks to talk to her father outside alone because he knows that fake dad is not too thrilled with the whole idea. After a little while Amanda sends out fake mom to interrupt the men. Once dad goes inside mom starts hitting on Matt, touching his chest and kissing him on the cheek and neck. Then dad walks back out and wants to know what is going on.

At this point Amanda feels like the joke has gone on long enough and sends her “parents” in so that she can let Matt in on the joke. After telling him that it was a big prank Matt is speechless but later states that it is the best joke that has ever been played on him and that he fell for it. Matt then meets Amanda’s real family but because of time we did not get to see much more than them sitting down to eat before Amanda whisked him away for some alone time. They kiss, and Matt tells her that she is extraordinary.

The next night the women are waiting in the mansion when Matt walks in. There is no party, no final words, just straight into the rose ceremony. Matt hands out the roses, in order, to Shayne, Amanda and Chelsea, leaving Noelle to walk sadly out the door.

Matt walks her out and tells her that they connected but he did not feel like they had the easiest time with it. Noelle tells him that she will take part of the responsibility because she did not open up to him very quickly. He tells her that he does not think the whole scenario of the house, one man and 25 women worked for her and she admits that it didn’t. Once in the car Noelle says that it was all a bit confusing, but that this is not the first time that her lack of willingness to let down her guard has left her alone.

Back in the house Matt tells the three remaining ladies that he is taking them to Barbados. The four of them celebrate getting to this point in the “game” and the rest of us are left to look ahead to next Monday nights show.
